The 10 best books and ebooks to start studying SEO

There are many texts dedicated to SEO, perhaps too many. In these years I have happened to read many. The first ones I was actually reading left me with interesting inputs, which were then useful for experimenting with the first techniques in practice. Some, however, I found them not very valid and badly written.

The best book on SEO? It has 3 characteristics

In my opinion, an SEO text must always have three requirements:

1 # It is accessible to everyone, but without falling into superficiality

What do you mean? I find it of little use to write a text on SEO with the aim of thinking it even for those who will never deal with SEO. Often, these books are easy for the uninitiated to read and do not present major comprehension difficulties and very few technicalities.
SEO is a complex discipline and thinking of studying it without "getting your hands dirty" with the technical part will never lead to concrete results.
Therefore, technical texts on discipline are welcome, so that there is no illusion that we will find ourselves facing an "easy for everyone" profession.

2 # It is written by an authoritative and experienced professional

Italian publishing lately has a serious problem with digital marketing texts: it agrees to publish too many books by authors without proven experience. SEO, then, is such a vast discipline that if you wanted to explain it all with books, you could even write ten different ones, on specific aspects.

3 # Presents real examples and / or case studies, preferably from the same author

Okay, the theoretical foundations of SEO are needed. However, the same information can also be found in one of the many online blogs and information sites. What can distinguish a book on SEO is the fact of enriching it with examples of personal experiments and the relative results or success stories achieved privately or for its customers. Unfortunately, many Italian books do not have one.
Well, let's get to the point. Below are the books I have liked the most in the past 10 years. I will offer you the ones that I found most valid in my personal training and that helped me to study the basics of a constantly evolving activity.

1. The Art of SEO: Mastering Search Engine Optimization

The best books to train on SEO: The Art of SEO

It is considered by many to be the bible of SEO. In fact, it is a nice volume of almost 1000 pages and was among the first books on the subject to have widespread diffusion on the market. Written in English and now I believe in the third edition (I own the first edition which has been updated and enlarged), it has the benefit of treating all areas in a fairly exhaustive way (for what a book allows you to do) that an SEO or SEO team is called to take action on.

If you have a minimum of familiarity with English (and if you do SEO you should have it) you can not have this text in your collection.

2. SEO and SEM. Advanced guide to web marketing

Maltraversi's book: SEO and SEM. Advanced guide to web marketing

Marco Maltraversi's book was among the first Italian texts dedicated to SEO to see the light. The volume, in addition to being quite full-bodied, full of examples and updated on the latest Google news, also offers some "old style" ideas and examples of SEO, such as Black Hat techniques in vogue in the past which, although no longer functional, is useful know to enrich one's cultural background.

3. Professional Search Engine Optimization with PHP

What books to read to learn how to do SEO? Professional Search Engine Optimization with PHP

This is one of the first technical texts that I got to read. Unfortunately, it has two problems: it is a text from 2007 and you can't find it for sale anymore - but if you know how to search well online you can easily retrieve the pdf version. Why do you recommend reading it? Because it is a book that was designed to explain SEO to developers. Consequently, it is a very technical text, which focuses mainly on the more technical aspects of SEO, such as redirect rules, the creation of SEO friendly URLs. In addition, it offers a complete overview of Black Hat SEO which, as mentioned, although it is highly discouraged today to implement it, it is always useful to know it, at least to understand when your site may be subject to some Negative SEO attacks.

4. Inbound Marketing and SEO: Insights from the Moz Blog
This English-language book is written by some authors of the Moz blog, including Rand Fishkin, and contains the best articles published in the blog and updated on the topic of Link Earning, Content Marketing, Digital PR, and Analytics. Very interesting if you want to understand how to devise creative strategies to produce content that links naturally.

5. The Link Building Book (ebook)
Paddy Moogan is known as one of the best professional link builders and, above all, as one of the most creative. From his ebook (in English) there is much to be learned about those less "discounted" strategies for link building and which are more related to the branch of Link Bating. Highly recommended.

6. Inbound marketing. The new rules of the digital age
It is the book (of) by Jacopo Matteuzzi and deals with a very broad topic (which is then a strategic approach), but in its text, there is also a lot of SEO and explains well how this channel is able to influence all the others. For this reason, in fact, we speak of Inbound Marketing, which is the path that every company that invests in digital should follow.

7. .Access - Made it easy (ebook)

How do you do SEO but don't know access? Big mistake! Access is the file that allows you to manage the way your site communicates with the server and define how users and bots can interact with your site. Knowing EVERYTHING you can do with that file is a bit difficult, unless you have a background as a server-side developer, but this text, which is still quite complete on the subject, becomes your valuable ally as it certainly helps you to learn the basics that will come in handy for your SEO profession. Available only in the ebook version.

8. The art of SEO. User first

Ok, you may be thinking that this little-known text is one of the many features of the better known "The Art of SEO", with which it shares the title. But is not so. Contrary to what one might think, the text is written by more authors than working in Webranking, one of the most historic Italian SEO agencies and which include Nereo Sciutto, who started doing SEO like 20 years ago. In addition to this, the book is written really well (without conceptual and grammatical errors or unnecessary turns of words) and is the most updated that you will find on the market. Although it is not vast, it is quite complete. It is understood that the practice will be done online.

9. SEO power. Strategies and tools to be visible on search engines

Giorgio Taverniti's book, one of the first to spread SEO training throughout Italy (if you have been working in the sector for a few years, you will not be able to remember his GT Study Days around Italy) starting from his GT forum. The book has a few years, but Giorgio is one of those who have seen SEO evolve in over a decade of study and analysis.

10. Content Marketing for Blog, Social, and SEO

Finally, I take advantage of this article to self-promote by also reporting my book. The main theme is certainly Content Marketing, but I guarantee you that inside you will find a full-bodied part relating to the acquisition of links with the contents, plus real success stories that I have been able to achieve in recent years with my agency.
